Sigma 30mm f1.4

  • What do you intend to shoot?
  • How much reach do you need?

I'm asking these because I own a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 that I bough also for better low-light shooting my little daughter. My experience is the following:

  • F/2.8 is not really enough on a crop camera in low light
  • The lens (I mean the 17-50 I have) is heavy in a small crop camera. I have a Nikon D3300, it's a bit smaller body than the T6i/s, but I think 24-70 is bigger than 17-50, so the ration would be about the same. It's not too comfortable to walk around with that lens.
  • I prefer much more the 35mm f1.8 prime I also have cause it's faster and also handling the camera is way easier with that lens.
  • The best solution for low-light situations is a flash - at least for my use case of shooting kids indoor. I brought my flash after the Sigma 17-50, but if I would been had the flash before the lens, I might not been buying the lens. Right now I consider selling it actually ( mean the lens )
  • Consider also the combination of 24mm f2.8 STM and 50mm f1.8 STM, it should be actually cheaper than the Sigma. Or consider 35mmf2, 50mm f1.4, 85mm 1.8 (I think).
  • Or consider the Sima 18-35 f1.8, that one is a beast designed fro crop sensors, faster the the 24-70 and I think also sharper.

Zoltan thank you for the reply on the 17-50 and 24-70. I plan on shooting dark/low light rides at Walt Disney World. I just bought a Sigma 30mm f1.4. I don't shoot a lot of indoors, usually only 'no flash allowed'. Maybe this Sigma 30mm prime will be the answer for me. I just looked at the 18-35mm f1.8, it's $799 new, nice lens though. I think I'll see if the 30mm f1.4 will cover what I need. Maybe I need more zoom for a walking around lens like Sigma/Tamron 18-200mm, 18-250mm or 16-300mm?
