how much light is transmitted/lost? i assume power needs to be upped quite a bit?

I don't know exactly but since the subject is really close to this lens (30mm macro) I don't think it's a problem. (it works well with a medium external flash but most probably it would fail with the built-in flash)

I agree that working with styrofoam is a nightmare but to make the prototype it was fine. The problem is that I never develop my prototypes further.
