Head due West - then South

I have driven cross-country (USA) several times, over  just about all the main east-west routes, from the most northern ones to the most southern one. If I were starting at Minneapolis-St.Paul, I would head due West on US 90 and see the South Dakota Badlands, Black Hills, etc. etc. toward (and spend time at) Yellowstone, then due South through Utah to Monument Valley etc. and then on to Bryce and of course the Grand Canyon. Then further south to the incredible Arizona sites, e.g. Sedona. (Of course, as others have pointed out, traveling in the desert in August is....well...not a winner, but you must have considered that. Hiking...in summer...in the desert...well, to each his own. If you haven't been to Las Vegas, be sure to walk the sidewalks at night, and see one or more of the top-rated shows. Nearby is also Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire, if you like easy access and spectacular formations.
