IMO, Canon's attention to a lot of things that matter to those of us who like to use the VF is sorely lacking. The manuals are heavy on using Live View, and shooting movies, but how about a few pages on VF issues ??
This is how Canon misleads people and it really bothers me. They know removing the eye sensor would be an issue for many so they don't bother to mention hoping they can fool people into buying the camera anyway. If I ever leave Canon for another brand this type of behavior will be a major reason for it.
I bought the little G5X last year to take on trips as a backup phone to my SL1, and to use in the evenings when I want a "drop-in-the-purse" phone when we are at dinner. The GX1 has a touch screen menu with tiny settings icons clustered around the edge of the LCD. Because of their size, it is very easy to touch the wrong icon when you want to change a setting. So I was very happy when I saw the SL2 stil retained that format. Just wish Canon had left a good auto eye sensor alone ! I guess there's alwyas something we wish we had that no longer works, and we just have to adjust to it .... and we get over it !.... hopefully !
To be fair to Canon, they aren't the only brand that does this but they seem to do it far more often. Many times with other brands something is left out for design or cost reasons. With Canon, the things they leave out many times are in previous models. By this point the eye sensor should be on every camera they make with a view finder. It should be as necessary as putting a shutter button on a camera. Canon does so many things right that if they would just address the small details they would dominate the camera industry. The SL2 with an eye sensor and 10 shot buffer would have made it a nearly perfect camera as it is not just an entry level camera, it is one that has the interest of more advanced users due to its size and weight. By providing a few things they could make the camera serve both groups very well and still not cannibalize their upper tier DSLR cameras.
Meanwhile over on the Canon FF forum there's a lot of angst because the 6D 2 has sensor that is reported as inferior to the 80 yet the SL2 has a sensor that appears to be as good as the one found on the 80D. Over here there's angst because of a lack of an eye sensor. Funny old world.
Good points!
I think the SL2 is just fine the way it is, and I don’t think there’s anything malicious on Canon’s part. If the cost was higher then things would be different and I would expect the SL2 to have more features and great capabilities (eye proximity sensor for auto display off, 45-pt cross-type at f/8, light flicker detection with anti-flicker, movie electronic stabilization, intelligent viewfinder, custom C mode dial, autofocus micro-adjustment, faster frame rates, larger buffers, better movie, etc), but considering all of the upgrades and the lower cost, I think it’s a great offering.
The eye sensor issue doesn't really bother me and the display button is something I think I'd find quite handy.
The 6D2 is unfortunately a different situation.
Indeed considering it's around one and half grand more than the SL2 the sensor issue is a bit of a puzzle.
