Fuji X100F vs Sony A6500 - my opinion and several images
Jul 22, 2017

I just got the Fuji X100F about 4 days ago. I have had the Sony A6500 since December 2017 with the 16-70 and hardly used 55-210 got it for $130 when I got the A6500 kit it was a deal and I knew I could break even one day if I sold that lens. Over this time I did test the 70-200 mm 4.0, Sony 24 mm 1.8, 50 mm 1.8 OSS and Batis 25 mm. The idea was to be a small camera when I did not want to bother with my Nikon D750.
I do have history with X100S, Fuji XT-1, XE-1 and 7 of the system lenses. However, the reason I left Fuji for Nikon was work related for what I needed my camera to do and the XT-1 just could not do it professionally.
There were other filler p&s cameras ( a few of them bought and sold)
I like the Sony A6500 for image stabilization, video functions and the images are ok. I like the Fuji X system as a whole. I was not ready to switch to Fuji XT2 or XP2 or Sony Full Frame from Nikon D750. I have all the Nikon glass I could ever need pertaining to what i do.
This said I like more about Fuji then Sony. The A6500's LCD is abysmal in sun light cant see anything and thank goodness the A6500 has a EVF or you would be guessing.
So the access to functions is better with Fuji compared to and IMO with that learning curve to Sony. Sort of the same but not as fast. Sight unseen the Sony A9 is sort of like the Nikon D750 with the external button functions I think last I looked if memory is any good.
What I do not like about Fuji is for me I must have a hand grip with these cameras. My XE, XT, X100s and now X100F all got the RRS or Fuji grip in some fashion the RRS grip for the X100F is really nice since it has a cut out to easily rest your fingers naturally (a ledge sort of) total keeper that way. The weather being humid they perspire and a grip I fully believe is needed or these cameras will slip away.
I do not like the side door of the X100F that with the HDMI port. I hit the lip of the door or when in the bag it occasionally opens. It need a lock.
The camera should come with a hot shoe cover (nit pick I know) I use a Nikon BS-1 I think it is called.
I hate my hand hits the Q button of the X100F very easily. The Q button needs a lock
I do not like that if I set a custom FN for the Flash of the X100f I have to hit the back/disp button and I can hit the center OK button to accept my changes.
***If video is more important than stills I would say buy Sony or a camera with IBIS, it matters. I can hold that A6500 with one hand a get good in focus images not with the X100F. Lets say I need a higher shutter speed potentially.
I really like the convenience of a built in ND filter of the X100F, seriously all cameras need this but I do not know why maybe self contained cameras are different.
I and you have to live with the fact the X100F or Sony RX1 or Ricoh G whatever Fuji X70 that is all the camera will be and the potential is there with a Fuji XT, XP, micro 4/3's, Sony when you can attach lenses. I know the screw mount conversion lenses are cumbersome to take on and off vs bayonet style of the rest.
IF Sony A6500's LCD was better it would be a harder decision and if Fuji had IBIS, just wow it would be a very easy decision for me.
SO, I have some time to sleep on my final decision and I most likely will sell the A6500 not sure I can keep both, i.e. need money to pay for the other camera.
I do want to test the XT-20 with 23 mm F 2.0 against the X100F to satisfy my curiosity
Here are very unscientific non artsy snapshots as I tested both
The last image of the metal works camera man I bought today at the festival from a metal worker. He had this and one with a Tripod and camera thing, liked this one
