Both cameras have IBIS, which is great for stills with lenses that lack OIS. However, the G85 IBIs works in works in 4K video, which the GX8's doesn't, so you don't get hybrid 5-axis IS in 4K with the latter.

Ed, just to add some clarification, I don't think the GX8 does any in-body mechanical stabilization when shooting video.  I think with video, the only in-body stabilization it does is via digital manipulation of the video where it crops the video to stabilize the output.  That's why it doesn't work with 4K.

With the G85, it can use its sensor-shift in-body stabilization when recording video.  It also provides the option of also using the digital stabilization like in the GX8.

Most of all, the tilting viewfinder in a godsend when you want the camera at waist level or lower in bright sunlight which can make the LCD screen very hard to view when titled for that purpose (sunlight shining directly onto the screen, especially on a Cretan White-sand beach last month).

Agreed, I love the tilting EVF on my GX7.

Both cameras have dust and splash resistant sealing and are equally well constructed (though the flash card access is more practical on the G85). I always travel with two camera bodies when I go overseas

Same here.  I'm hoping the successor to the GX85 or GX8 will be have the feature set I'm looking for so I can have a newer, rangefinder-esque backup to my G85.
