Why? If you shoot wide open you'll need to stack more frames. Maybe if the lens has smooth bokeh then it makes less stacking artifacts.

A couple of reasons:

  • Opening up reduces diffraction issues.
  • Opening up reduces depth of field, so features that may cause artifacts in focus stacking can be eliminated because they blur away into irrelevance. It can save a lot of time in focus stacking retouching, even with more stack frames.
