Has Film Improved?

I remember the old days when ASA 800 color film was too noisy--and then it wasn't. And I remember the days when I couldn't really go over ISO 800 on a full frame dslr, and now I can go to 3200 on an m43 and not be too concerned.

So I think back--what about film? In the last 10-15 years when I have no longer shot film, has it improved? If it has improved like digital has, ISO 1600 film should be like Kodachrome. But I suspect it's not. Have Kodak and Fuji (wait, Kodak is no longer around, isn't it?) not put any real money into it, since its been relatively abandoned?
