While I definitely see the benifits of the grip, I've never really been a fan of battery grips. If you're shooting a lot of video and/or using heavy lenses I'd say it's almost a must-have. Personally I don't shoot much video and I use lighter lenses and I just think the grip gets in the way and makes things unergonomic when using lighter/smaller lenses. I also feel that it makes the camera quite bottom-heavy.

This is of course highly subjective, we all have our own preferences

I agree. I too don't feel like using the grip with smaller primes. With teles like 50-140 and 100-400 though it is indeed useful for balance as well as performance. With 100-400 as I mentioned in my review, I could clearly tell how it boosted the AF performance. There was a significant difference not even counting little more comfort you get with grip with those heavy lenses.

Is the AF boosted even more with the grip compared to using boost mode without the grip, though? Because boost mode without the grip also speeds up the AF.

Yes, it is! I was definitely skeptical about this as I read in the reviews where they mentioned of better performance with the grip. Because I know that I can use boost mode even without grip. But with grip AF performance and even EVF refresh is really nicer!!! My theory is that its more power (3 batteries vs 1 battery).
