Batteries, plural. In addition to the big rechargeable NB-2LH battery, there's a CR2016 "button" battery, rated for 5 years use (see page 38 of the XT/350D manual). If the CR2016 starts running down, the camera can behave bizarrely.

The CR2016 is in the battery compartment, next to the NB-2LH battery.

Some camera settings, notably date and time, will be lost when you pull out the old CR2016. You'll have to reset them when you put the new battery in.
