German or Japanese Optics?

I have recently purchased a new Sony a7R ll body and at the time of purchase I also bought a Carl Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f2.8 lens. For a good many years I have used Leica M film camera and Leica M optics as I very much preferred the way that German Glass resolves over the Japanese equivalent. I am familiar with Japanese Glass having used various Nikon F model cameras over the years coupled with Nikkor optics but since moving to Leica M I have much preferred German Glass, so I was surprised to find that the Carl Zeiss Sonnar lens which I purchased was stamped "Lens Mae in Japan". I know that all Zeiss lenses I have come across before have either been Carl Zeiss West Germany or Carl Zeiss Jena which were East German prior to unification so can someone explain to me about Carl Zeiss Japan
