I'm not a full-time wedding photographer, but I have friends who do this for a living. Once in a while when I have a free weekend, I'll join one of my friends to shoot alongside them for the day. This past weekend, we shot a wedding in at a hotel in Manhatten Beach, California. Usually, the best part of my job as the second shooter is that I have complete freedom to shoot however I want. I'm grateful that I have friends who have complete confidence in me.

My job is to assist the photographer, the videographers, and the clients in any way possible. That includes putting down my camera to help carry heavy items or helping "clean up" the background in a scene for the main shooters. For this image, I noticed the flower girl playing with her brother, while the bride is soothing the crying baby belonging to a bridesmaid. Nothing fancy about the shot, other than I appreciated the AF speed of the 23 f/1.4.

I'm sure you had a lot of fun!

Being a second shooter at a wedding is the best job in wedding photography. When my wife and I were shooting weddings she always opted to play that role - in fact, she downright refused to be the first shooter simply because she loves the freedom of moving about and getting all the informal, candid shots, and she was simply brilliant at that.

On the odd occasion when I was second shooter to another photographer I also really enjoyed it because there is far less pressure on you, which means that it gives you the time and opportunity to unobtrusively get really good shots. Just a pity that I did not have my X-T2 at the time, because the tilt screen and completely silent shutter would have given me even more latitude.

BTW, your shot of the father of the bride is excellent, I'm sure they just loved it! That's the kind of wedding image that people tend to treasure most.

Have fun!
