Underexposed images with reflective graphics

I've had this problem for years with both the D200 I used to have and my D700 I've had for over 5 years. I shoot motorsports, primarily at night. Some cars have reflective decals on them. Some come out okay, most come out underexposed. I have asked around for years and never can get an answer that works. So I'm bringing my question here. What setting(s) affects this? As you can see in the samples below, the first is with reflective that is underexposed and the second has no reflective. The settings are the same with both shots. I have a buddy that's had the same problem with a D300, D800, and D500. Any help would be appreciated.
