New Fuji Lens for newborn

My favorite lens for my 7 months old (don't move much yet), is by far the 56mm
Hi,

I know this is very early but my Mrs is expecting and we are planning for our first born's arrival next year. So after becoming a soon to be daddy I somehow have managed to convince my wife to to let me buy a new lens to take those awesome photos for our child.

I have an X-T10 with an 18-55. I am not a pro but like I have learnt a lot with this setup. I have been looking at Fuji's XF 90mm F2 R LM WR.

Just wondering what the guru's of dpreview think about the best lens for a newborn to go along with 18-55 or if that is enough?

TIA
I'm in a similar boat (new baby arriving soon). My spouse won a new x-t20 for me, which replaced an 11 year old Evolt-500 (which I loved) about a month ago, but our budget won't stretch to get anything beyond the included 16-50 that was included with the camera.

I was considering the Yongnuo YN 50mm f/1.8 and a FotodioX Canon EF to Fuji adapter, which would total around 120 bucks for a fast 50mm, albeit with manual focus.

Although that might seem like a crazy expenditure to get a manual lens, I've read good things about the yongnuo 50mm.
The kit 16-50 lens will be much better than this setup. You'd be better served to save a few $ and buy the 18-55 2.8-4, or a used f/2 prime lens than wasting $120 on this setup.
You make a good point. I probably should wait, and it's probably not worth suggesting this idea to anyone else either. Thanks for the opinion.
mpb.com has the 18-55 f/2.8-4 available used for $285. You can find similar deals here and on Fred Miranda and you will be light years ahead.

For $345 you can get the 35 mm f/2 from mpb.com as well (used) and can find similar deals here. Or $400 brand new. A spectacular lens with super fast AF.

It may seem like a lot, but just throw $20 into a jar every week and in a few months you will be there.

You alternative has little resale value so you would sink that $120 into the MF lens that is less than ideal and if/when you want to upgrade would have to come up more.

I would vote for the 35mm f2 or 50mm f2.

The 35mm f1.4 is a great lens but the slower AF might frustrate you when the baby starts moving more.

On the same note, if you used a 90mm on a baby that's starting to move, crawl, and walk, he/she will move out of focus very quickly! You will then want a new lens after 6 months.
I find myself using MF on X-T10 more and more with the 18-55 so its good to know that f2 will be faster at AF

Wow! So many replies and advice on my question. Thanks a lot guys.
The consensus seems to be for 35mm now to decide between F1.2 or F2.
I am glad I decided to ask before I went out and bought it. Here in Australia, they are almost half the price of a 90mm so definitely saving some money. Well I have enough time to save up for it by the time baby arrives.

Cheers

"Best lens for a new born" sounds as if you haven't fully learned to use and enjoy your existing gear. It is a fine lens, useable wide open and at all focal lengths. And I'm sure Fujifilm have approved its use for newborn children too!

My honest suggestion: don't collect gear unless you are truly missing something your existing setup can't offer. Save the funds and enjoy photography. Don't let colorful advertisement mislead you to need new gear.

All the best for your growing Family!

I would consider the new 50/2. It's the better portrait lens compared to 35mm. And when your child is getting older and is moving faster, it's autofocus is faster than the 35/1.4 and 56/1.2.

The 35/1.4 is a great lens, and you get great detailed shots of your newborns with that lens. I use it by myself. But AF isn't it's strenght compared to the new F2 trio. If you already considered the 90/2, you could also buy the 35/1.4 (maybe used) and the 50/2.

The OP will probably need the money for diapers and baby toys anyway....

The 18-55mm lens can get outstanding results when used properly. This is more a case of needing better technique than better gear.

I hope he already calculated this when he started this request.

While I also think that the 18-55 is a great lens, I have to disagree that it's the best option for his use case. Of course the 18-55 is great for the ocassional shots when the kids grow up. But if you want to make Images with a narrow DOF, that are typical for new born photography, a fast lens really is the way to go. Especially if you don't want to use a flash all the time.

The 50 requires more room that one often has. The 35 doesn't would be much better in close quarters. I would go with either a 35 f1.4 or 23 f1.4 depending on the size of the rooms.

I say the 35mm f2.0, all of the xtrans III sensors can do 1600 ISO with low to no noise. the faster focus will come in handy when the baby starts moving. Also the super narrow DOF at 1.4 will be difficult to capture in focus when the baby is on the move. just my $0.02!

I used 35mm 1.4 to shoot my new born a month ago, it was wonderful and I did not feel the need for any other lens. I have 18-55, 23 1.4, 56mm and few other lenses, but there was no need for any of them to shoot new born. few pics for your reference.. hope that helps.

Which is also why the 90mm is particularly not a good idea! How big are his rooms? :)

Must be a lot bigger than the rooms in the apartment I lived in when my first rug rat was born ;-)!

Congratulations on both new lens and baby.
A new lens is nice baby gift for wife.

the 35 1.4 and found the focus too slow.

And... Agreed again (as an owner of a 35 f2)

Wish I went with 1.4
