So the SL2 offers the lowest cost access to the new Canon sensor. Canon is now offering four DSLR's and two MILCs with the same sensor (unless I missed one). So let's not complain about the choices available! It does, however, make choosing between them difficult.

I guess Canon is trying to maximize it's return on the investment to develop the sensor and DPAF  live view focusing, which makes sense.  The analagy would be GM and it's multiple divisions using the same engines, transmissions and "platform".

So that makes the SL2 the Chevy small car.  Yes it has the limitations of the SL1, including the tunnel vision OVF, low tech OVF focusing and awkward EC button. However, I learned digital photography on the SL1 and I guess I have adjusted (I did buy a 7D to get a bigger OVF and better controls but find I go back to the SL1 for size, weight, better live view and touchscreen controls).

I need good flash performance for event photography and so that knocks out the M5/6 from what I read here.  That leaves the four DSLRs.

So for me, it comes down to a decision of go small/ low cost/ limited features but same IQ (SL2) or go big, more cost, better UI, faster performance (80D).

TheCanon refurb site has the 80D with or without the 18-55 kit lens at $799 last I looked, so cost spread  is actually not that big. So it comes down to size and features. So let's see what the reviewers say about the SL2.
