18-55 is not enough. You don't want to use flash on a child on first days/weeks when he/she comes out and with slow 18-55 you would have to use flash.

I propose 35mm prime, either 1.4 or 2.0. Some will advise 2.0 version because of presumably faster focus but my advice is 1.4 because 1 stop more of light can make a difference and in low light 1.4 lens focuses quicker than 2.0.

And also, 56mm f1.2 is excellent for portraits, but more expensive.

23mm primes distort too much "small objects" (baby or baby's face), so don't buy it.

If you'll buy just one, get 35mm f1.4. But if you can persuade your wife to buy you two lens, than add 56mm f1.2 also
