I think you can afford to close down a stop as well on those shots. The STM I believe is a little better, certainly I've found the 18-55 STM better than the vanilla 18-55 IS.

Do you have any experience to share? I just set 77 as that in Canon tutorial.
To be honest I've not used it as much as I'd like - mainly because it is too much of a hog on processing power and disk space on my ageing, but soon to be replaced, laptop. But the occasional time I've tried it on better photos I've been pleased.
PS - please respond at the bottom of the post and not the top - it gets quite confusing otherwise to follow who said what when.
