Re: I wouldn't do it

I want to provide the OP with another perspective from someone who has wrestled with a similar decision recently.

I'm one of the crazy ones who jumped fully into the deep end of the Samsung pool over the last two months and I do not regret the decision one iota. Like the OP, it's not my only system (Fuji, Canon M) so I'm not fully relying on a dead-end platform. I made the decision with my eyes fully open to what I was doing and the potential downsides. However, for me, there were some real upsides that swayed me such as the best user interface and ergonomics in the marketplace, weather resistant 'S' lenses to go with a weather resistant body (NX 1), lenses not available in the Fuji system, a suite of cool pancake lenses, technology that is still highly-innovative three years later, etc. But deep down, I've had NX1 lust since the camera came out on the market and I figured this was time to jump in if I was ever going to commit. I didn't make the decision lightly and I did spend a few months agonizing over whether I should make the commitment or not.

Knowing that I've invested in a system with finite availability, my longish-term strategy is to purchase multiple camera bodies to provide some redundancy in case of camera failure or bad accidents. I'm making the commitment for the long-term, not for the short-term.

I'm also forcing myself to be a bit patient in the acquisition process and that patience has paid off so far, especially when looking for deals beyond eBay. For instance, I picked up a slightly-used but pristine NX1, the Samyang 12mm and a few extras for $1100 Cdn ($830 US) less than two weeks ago from a local fellow as well as a NX30 body for $225 US last week. So there are deals out there.

So, my answer would be to "do it' if you know what you're doing, why you are doing it and have thought through the contingencies.
