I know this is an old thread but you miss something about battery life. Letting a battery go flat (0 volt) shortens its life. If a battery goes flat too often it will die quickly. Li-Ion battery voltage should not go below about 2.5 volts per cell to preserve its lifespan. As you cannot change the small internal battery yourself most of the time, it is safer to avoid it to go flat by letting the big battery in the camera when the camera is off. The big battery will keep the internal clock running and the personal configuration data much longer than the small internal battery alone. But you must think about replacing the big battery with a fresh one before its voltage go below 2.5 volts per cell...
