What we have here, GW, is a dead forum. It's almost like this thread doesn't exist.

That's because Canon hasn't released a Powershot camera worth commenting on for several years.

Except for the G1X II, G3X, G5X, G7X, and G7X II... yeah, except for all of those.

It depends what you want in a compact camera. I considered G7 X II carefully:

1) It's small, yet it doesn't fit my pocket.

2) It's got a fast lens yet it's very soft.

3) It goes to 24mm but sharpness is uneven in the 24-35mm range, which is noticeable even in small prints.

4) It writes RAW, but RAW files are larger than my D3300 NEFs (even when compressed to DNG!), which I find completely ridiculous since G7 X lens delivers 3MP at best, and 35 1.8 DX on D3300 delivers 12MP (easy 60x40 prints).

So I wouldn't buy it even for $100 simply because it doesn't do what I need it to do. It's not a carry-everywhere-all-the-time cam, and it fills up my HDD with huge files without detail.

In the end, I got myself an SD4000 for dirt cheap and couldn't be happier about it, with CHDK loaded. DNGs downsampled to 6MP are only around 3MB in size, which is sufficient for people/event photos. Got lens profile, color profile and a grey card - complete control, just like my DSLR. With G7 X, you can't turn off lens correction in LR for example. ELPH 330 HS was my second choice!

None of the models released after ELPH 330 HS caught my attention, I just don't consider them "value for money".
