Infrared with SD1

While I have been shooting IR on Bayer sensor cameras for a while now, I JUST started playing with my SD1 in this field. I'm obviously doing something(s) wrong. It starts at the Custom WB step and goes downhill from there...
I first remove the internal IR filter and reattach my (Sigma  EX HSM) 17-50mm f/2.8 with a 72mm 720nm filter. I then try to Custom WB using a variety of methods: With a Mennon WB screw cap filter attached, pointing at white surfaces, pointing at grass, grey cards, etc at a variety of focal lengths (always in manual focus as the shutter will not fire otherwise). And EVERY SINGLE TIME, the white balance image capture fails. I am running firmware 1.09. So it's up to date (as much as that camera can be...). What am I doing wrong? I might mention that the OVF is almost black, even at f/2.8. Is my only option to shoot long exposure on a tripod?

I am able to get Custom WB to work in visible spectrum, but never a single successful CWB in IR mode...
