Anyone using real filters for B&W work?

I have read several articles about the use B&W filters with digital cameras.  I've never done this but according to the articles you can better achieve the black and white effects with an actual filter rather than a digital one (either in-camera or via software such as Lightroom, Topaz or NIK Silver Effects filters).

Anyone here have such experience and words of wisdom regarding the use of real filters (Red, Green, Yellow, Etc.) shooting with their digital camera?

Here is a link to one such article at Outdoor Photographer .

The ability to 'see' the shot is more important than the gear used to capture it.
