Review - Ricoh GXR A12 50mm f2.5 Macro - A hit and a miss

This review is just about the A12 50mm module. I have also reviewed the Leica M-Mount module.

The GXR is seriously affordable today. Its not like my $28 Sigma DP1 I recently reviewed . But compared to a Leica M8, Fuji X100f, etc it is way more bang for the buck in my opinion.
Specially if you value mojo.

And that is what I think I like the most about the camera.
It has serious mojo in the images.

Other pros are:

  • Nice grip and buttons. Pretty much like the Ricoh GRii
  • Nice build
  • The peaking is very good and not to distracting
  • It shoots native DNGs

What not to like is definitely first and foremost the speed. Or lack of speed that is.
Even when using the snap focus, which I love on the GRii.

For the macro shots it doesn't matter to much. But for everything else it just feels sluggish.
Making me wish it had a real technical manual focus which would be much faster.
I might be a bit melodramatic here. It is usable, no doubt.
But still... it at least bothers me enough to pretty much always reach for my M-Mount instead.

I have made a video review as well with plenty of samples (mostly from the M due to the reasons above):

Nothing wrong with the output IMO.

B&W also looks nice imo.
