Second camera: What are my options?
Jun 10, 2017
I am presently considering getting a second camera. As I now mostly focus on social event photography (dancing and parties), I am looking for a camera that could do well in both video and photography. In most cases, one can assume that such events are usually poorly lit.
I presently own a E-M10.1 with a few olly lenses (12-40 F2.8, 45 F1.8, 40-150 R, and the 14-42 pancake lens). The E-M10.1 has served me well as a casual photographer and I have no complaints about it until today, except when I realized that I needed to consider the limitations of 29 recording limit as well as a secondary camera for simultaneous recording + photography.
I have initially considered between getting an E-M5.2 (Used) + 12-100mm or E-M1.2. The former case gives better bang for the buck within $1,600 (I have a $1,700 budget) whilst the latter is just my greed on getting the latest sensor and low-light shooting capabilities of the E-M1.2. However, I soon realized that both models from Olympus have the 29 minute recording limit. I have thought of other ways, by spending additional $200 for a cheap camcorder instead, but that may not be the wisest option after checking the video quality of these camcorders on youtube; they are simply no different from my E-M10.1.
Given that, I have also considered getting a DMC-G7 (used) + E-M5.2's since the G7 is considered one of the best video camera, but the budget of getting another IS lens for the DMC-G7 doesn't justify its price. Technically speaking, the video camera may as well just be sitting on the tripod at all times, so IS could be less of a priority.
The obvious choice seems to be getting a DMC-G85/80/8 (It's DMC-G8 here in Japan). However, I'm frankly not quite sure if this camera is the right choice given I have already invested so much in the olly lenses. From comments and reading, this particular model also seems to have some issues with olly lenses like the 12-100mm f2.8. There is also a youtuber who said he returned it because of the microphone noise.
All in all, what are my options? Should I wait for the E-M10.3 or should I just hit the nail with the DMC-G8? Given that all of them use a 16MP sensor, perhaps it might be a very big upgrade from E-M10.1 to any of these other options.
TLDR: I'm looking for a m43 camera that I could potentially call it as an upgrade from my E-M10.1 and has decent video recording capabilities, preferably without the 29 minutes recording limit (but, I guess I could just live with it...).
