Speedlite recommendation for M5? (and Manual Focus Lenses)
Jun 6, 2017

So I'm eyeballing the 270EX II as it can tilt for bounce as I've been missing (but not badly missing) my bounce flash from my M3, but it's relatively small and light for what it is.
I've used one before on my former M3 with really abysmal results as for some weird reason there was a massive delay whenever it went to fire, but it wasn't recycle time as first shot it would stutter something awful. I just assumed it was related to it being driven by a not phase-detect AF and probably wasn't TTL compatible. I believe the M5 is however TTL compatible and shouldn't share the issue, or so I assume since the marketing material indicated M5 and TTL-compliance.
Can anyone vouch that said delay on speedlites is gone on the M5/M6 that was present in the M3?
Also any thoughts about non-Canon lenses and speedlites? I noticed last night when I even used my onboard flash on my M5 with my new Rokinon 50mm f/1.2 for fill flash, the results were abysmal; would appear I need to use manual and dial it in just right, from what I gather. Any help here would be appreciated too in terms of recommendations for flash and non-Canon / MF focus driven lenses and flashes.
I'm a real rookie with flashes, it's an undiscovered country here. I've borrowed the 430EX and 580EX (once each) on my former 5DIII, both for weddings, and loaned the 270EX II from CPS to try on my M3 while I had it with bad results, hence why you try these things first. I don't have CPS anymore as I've sold off my 5DIII and L's, so no more loaners for me, sadly.
Thoughts, recommendations? Had the 90EX as well and sold it off, apparently it could act as a master for wireless driven flashes, that sounds appealing. I'm trying to stay light and small here and my gut says although I want a flash, maybe I should stay sans-flash. My gut is probably right, but fathers day sale is coming and 15% off refurb 270EX II makes it like $80, just dirt cheap. Dunno.
I just need some general advice on flashes, and particularly for my small/light/M5 is my sole weapon in mind.
