Thanks for the article cite it was interesting and probably explains what I'm seeing.  This picture was taken at about a right angle from the rising sun, so with the wider field of vision wide open at 16 it is picking up portions of the sky that has this effect described in the article.  at least that is my current theory.  Reducing vignette correction in LR helps a lot, but still visible, and maybe that is just the physics of it unless you go to a lot of work to normalize it.

BTW - I was shooting with the lens hood.
