Wonderful Lens but a little heavy

Weight versus speed

Just for comparison purposes.

The Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 in EF mount is even heavier, but cheaper (lens comparative prices in US$ from dpreview site)

Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 880gm $1499

Sigma DC 50-100mm f1.8 1490gm US$1061

Plus you will need an electronic adapter EF to M4/3 - Metabones BT4 $399 Ultra focal reduction $649 (prices from Metabones site)

So the adapter is a big hunk extra but levels the price playing field unless you wish to focal reduce - which of course turns the monster into a 35-70mm f1.3 lens which is now in another quite exclusive category. By this stage it is using its full aps-c image circle on the 4/3 sensor.

Furthermore the EF-M4/3 adapter opens up an even wider playing field of lens choices for M4/3 mount users and does not need to be restricted to just one lens.

Therefore if the Olympus is on the heavy side then the Sigma is in yet another league (physical size and speed). It does give some idea of just how much the size/weight scales up for those after those precious aperture gains.

A smaller slower lens would be quite useful but unfortunately the buying public would expect it to be cheaper as well. The question then arises - would we pay "top dollar" for a slower lighter lens if it was made to the highest optical standards?
