M5 focusing challenges overcome
3

In the spirit of Lightgreen's posts on manual focus with the Rokinon 50mm 1.2, here's a recent experience of mine.

First the image, from a recent trip to the zoo:

Canon EOS M5, EF 135 f/2L USM, 1/500, f/2.8, ISO 100, SOOC

Autofocus would only lock onto the chain link fence between me and the lion so I had to switch over and manually focus.  If you look semi carefully, you can see the cross pattern from the fence in the background.

I have mixed thoughts about missing the traditional PDAF of my old 40D or SL1 - in this case, it would've worked and I wouldn't have had to manually focus.  The struggles of the M5/M6 DPAF in low light are also well documented.

But the flip side (and what's more important for me) is how confident I can be that I won't slightly miss focus on a face, constantly be focusing with the center point and recomposing, or be hoping for the best when I have someone else take a picture for me -- now I just put it in face detect mode and relax.

More importantly, building confidence with manual focus is fun.  Turns out, with peaking and magnification, it's not that hard, either.
