Lest folks reading this get the impression tourists are regularly preyed upon by thieves on the street and Metro in Paris: they are not.

Really? After having a bag of really nice gear stolen in broad daylight in Rome last September, we came home and did some research and Paris seems to be right alongside Rome and other major European cities in which tourists are particularly targeted for theft.

I would strongly recommend that anyone touring major cities of the world to at least peruse Youtube's massive collection of videos by ordinary people showing where, how and who tourists are targeted.

Tourist EVERYWHERE are targeted for theft because tourists are in unfamiliar territory, get distracted and don't pay close enough attention to their stuff. I've lived and worked in Niagara Falls, NY (several million tourists per year) for most of my life and this is true here as well. As long as one cares for ones' stuff, the chances of becoming a victim of theft or robbery are very, very low and a random occurrence.

The one time as a tourist that I lost something was in Toronto, mid-Sunday afternoon near Kennisington market when this not as careful as I should have been frequent tourist left luggage visible in the back of our SUV. Smash and grab right on a main street. I should have known better and now its a lessen leaned.
