Challenge 50 Topic: The Paths We Take...

This challenge is about capturing the "paths" we take...literally. Paths should simply be any kind of walk or way by which people travel from one place to another, either by their "own design" or by vehicle/machine/device assistance. This can include sidewalks, trails, streets, boardwalks, bridges, walkways, highways, byways, canals, piers, trams, lifts, elevators, tight ropes :), balance beams, tracks, race/athletic courses, other waterways, competition lanes, steps, stairways, bike paths, other roads, etc, etc. The key of this challenge is to capture the actual "path". The addition of feet, legs, wheels, machines, etc. may or may not add to the impact of your photo. If the "path" seems to be rather vaguely defined, try to include other subject matter that illustrates how the "path" is being used...such as a canoe or raft going down a stream, a plane leaving a trail across the sky, footprints leading across the sand, a hand on a hiking stick with a wooded scene in the background, a person on horseback running across a field, a mountain climber grasping rock, a skate boarder riding a rail, ice skates leaving a pattern on the ice, a snow mobile leaving tracks in the snow (well, a few might have this opportunity :), etc. Just try to use your imagination... and it will take you in many different directions and places. Please, just get involved, have some fun, and share your results No matter where you go, there is a "path" to take. Although it's primarily a photographic assignment/lesson, you're free to be your creative selves. Like always, voters decide the best photos for the theme.

Challenge 50 has begun...please give me until sometime on Saturday, August 30th, to have the galleries set up. You will have two full weekends to obtain images, and the entry starting time began immediately after the C49 results announcement.

Guidelines to help things run smoothly...thanks for reading this stuff:

  • Four (4) images are allowed in each of the two galleries (Eligible and Exhibition).

  • Those who prefer to have critiques of their photos be more "critical", feel free to mark the image title with an asterisk ( ).

  • Please put your name and a unique title on each of your image thumbnails. It really helps to keep voting problem issues to a minimum.

  • Please resize your images to no larger than 800 pixels on the longest side before uploading to pBase... can be larger if a panoramic image. This cuts down on too much usage, and it helps to preserve the quality of your image upload for best viewing.

  • Please don't move images around in the galleries...respect first-come-first-serve. If you alter an image in any way, please replace it at the end of the gallery when uploading again. This should avoid any confusion...and everyone will be treated equally.

  • Please keep your questions and concerns posted in this thread for best response. One of us will address them as soon as possible.

  • Challenge time period will run from the time of the challenge 49 results announcement until Tuesday, September 9th, 2003, at 10pm EST (New York time). Time tables will be posted in the galleries. A separate voting thread will be posted shortly after the end of the Challenge period.

  • Eligible images must be taken with a Sony digital camera within the Challenge time period. The winner of this gallery will host the next Challenge.

  • Exhibition images can be obtained with any camera at any time. If you do not want to host the next Challenge, this is the gallery you should post your images to.

  • Remember, the login name to pbase is "stfchallenge"; and the password is "stfpost".

  • Here’s a link to the stfchallenge galleries page:

Everyone please join in on the fun...veterans and newcomers alike. It's really all about fun and sharing our common interest in photography. Please elaborate any of your techniques...everyone welcomes an opportunity to learn something new or try something different. I really look forward to your enthusiastic participation! Please, show me your "ways"!

Thanks Everybody,
Mike (MFC)
