I think this is true in many cases. Some people just want a high quality fixed-length portrait lens, and would probably be very happy with a smaller lighter F2.0 or 2.8 version of this lens. But Nikon doesn't give them any choice.
This special lens is probably most suited for our avant-garde (French for "Maybe insane, maybe genius, maybe both, maybe neither; It depends on whom you ask!") photographers. We've seen a few more of these here on the forum in recent times, and I'm very happy about it.

If you're into military stuff the true avant-garde was the rangers/scouts, arriving before the infantry and the rest of the army. Casing the joint, so to speak!

Very daring, very inventive! Just as the French artists forming the avant-garde!
