I purchased and installed the license.

I shall do the same, and see how it goes.

How can we best monitor whether the MWB3P real-time software is catching things that the Windows security misses, and hence, whether it is worth the money?

I honestly don't know. I've been running Microsoft Security Essentials (an improvement for Windows Defender on Windows 7) for a few  years and it's never reported an intrusion. Since I'm only using my Windows 7 installations for image editing, tax preparation, and iTunes updating an iPhone I don't think that's very unusual.

I'm more heavily using Windows 7 as I've increased my photo activity. My security background prompted me to manually scan using on-demand products and when I noticed MB had the capability of real time I decided to give it a whirl.

Regarding "worth the money" I consider the cost minimal and view it now as an essential item in my security strategy. I liken it to the way I think about warranties ...
