although i don't pay attention to detail short comings that you have noted, i do love the IQ and performance of this lens in general! this my premier go to lenses for just about any occasion outdoors. carrying this all day without any complaint just with a hand grip i use this lens for sunsets mostly and it is wonderful. i have tried it for small birds but the reach is not enough and using 1.4x tc is not the same as bare lens, although it is acceptable to some! the dimension and weight is not different than that a 70-200 II to worry about and it feels quite light to me! canon definitely created a winner lens here.

You can say that again. Superb lens. I'll try TC one day as well - my camera can AF with center point with 1.4TC so I might get something of it. I use crop body though which is already sort of 1.6 TC.

Even with Canon's 1.4 TC this lens produces stellar results, such as this:

I absolutely *love* this lens.  The only problem I found was that it is too heavy (with my 7DII) to hold steady enough when taking photos.  I have solved that by always using a monopod now.
