Do you have any opinion about the lack of a tripod mount for this lens? Is one necessary in your opinion/experience?

If you have come up with some solution to the lack of a tripod mount PLEASE share...

Thanks in Advance

I like to have a collar to keep the lens more stable for shooting Windsurfing, and I need to be able to change from horizontal to vertical fairly quick.

I just got the Sigma TS-31 Lens Collar in. Inner diameter is supposed to be 86mm, which is slightly bigger than the Sigma 100-400mm C behind the OS/ C1 C2 switches. I added 1 layer of black gaffer tape all around the inside of the collar. It slides on the lens, and is perfectly tight, when tightened.

This allows me to rotate the camera from horizontal to vertical, which I do quite a bit.

The balance point with my D500, MB-D17 with 8 AA batteries varies less than a 1cm between 100 and 400mm, and is pretty much straight below the collar.

Warning: If you carry the lens only (without attached camera body) by the collar and forget to tighten the collar, the collar will come off.

Vertical

The white line visible just inside the collar is Gorilla tape.

Horizontal

The white line visible just inside the collar is Gorilla tape.
