Available here in Canada. Tried one out on saturday at Downtown camera in Toronto. No idea about USB charging, what is odd is that yours prefers the lower amp ports, usually it's the other way around with USB.
Well yes, No other USB device I have fails to charge off a higher output USB socket. Some might be faster but they all work.
I've tried with another SX730 and it has the same issue. I chased Canon up and their answer was basically to "buy our cable and charger" for another £70.
The Canon USB wall charger has a 0.55A output.
I bought it as a travel compact camera. All my devices charge off USB. iPad, headphones, phone, etc. so I don't want to be packing another wall charger as well. (a slow one at that). I think it's going back.
That is crazy, the main reason I would want USB charging is exactly why you did, to be able to reduce the number of chargers/dongles I was packing on a trip! Or just plug it into my laptop's USB port.
Thanks for following up on this as this makes a big difference to me as to whether I am going to consider one of these cameras as a backup.
