D750 Light Meter Setting for back lit on bright day

Good Morning, New D750 shooter here, 28-300 lens. A bit overwhelmed by all the settings.

Mostly I shoot sailboat racing. You can see my 750 work here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/31222785@N02/albums

and my previous camera (D5000) work here; https://plus.google.com/+TimFuhrmann

First thing I noticed is how dark the images go in the foreground when I'm shooting into the sun. While that would seem like d'oh moment to most people, I was a little shocked given the magnificent exposure balancing on my D5000 under the same conditions..

While I do shoot with my back to the sun when I can, it is not always possible. I'm really hoping someone who knows this camera inside and out has a settings combination that will duplicate what my 5000 was doing on a regular basis without messing with it.

thanks,

Tim
