I think you answered your own question.

Fuji's are nice, but, you pay a pretty penny on both the body, and the optics.

I am not sure what prices ypu are looking at, but the bare X-T20 body is only $70 more than a bare M6.  The difference is only $50 with base kit lenses.  Compared to the M6, the X-T20 has a nice built in EVF and 4K video.  Yes, the Fuji lenses tend to be expensive, but they also tend to be much higher spec than the typical slow plastic EF-M affairs.

Fuji's do good skin tones btw, but, they're colors all-around are a bit lack-luster otherwise vs the Canon does well all around.

Canon's got cheap bodies and cheap glass, but, they aren't cheap in quality, just price.

Performance tends to be on a high level, but build is getting cheaper with more and more plastic everywhere.  I don't think we'll see another EF-M lens with a metal mount again.

If you really want cheap, DPR is right, A6000 is a good gig. I hate the handling and colors of the Sony though. Fuji's and Canon's are a pleasure to shoot with.

I've played with both the Fuji and own an M5 (the bigger brother to the M6), both fine cameras. You can't go wrong.

I'll just say I'm very happy with my setup (M5 and EF-M lenses). Excellent IQ and small/light and cheap.

Regarding better pictures, the two cameras are pretty evenly matched in IQ. It really is subjective in terms of what samples you're viewing.
