Manual focus on Canon SX60 fatally flawed?

Just this morning I discovered that there is a seemingly fatal flaw with the manual focus on the Canon SX60 HS.  The camera uses the  focus setting you made using the Manual focus system.  But it only uses that setting for the next shot. When you go to the next shot it autofocuses. If you press the focus button to see the three modes, it still shows that it is on Manual.  But believe me, it focuses on whatever is in front. This is a nightmare for me because I make stitched panoramas with an automated robotic head moving the camera through the frames.,  and when a tree branch appears in front of the background that I want to be in focus, it focuses on the tree instead !!!

Is this a bug because it sure as hell is NOT a feature that anyone wants. If you set manual focus it should keep that focus until you change it, right?
