I received my Solar Filter sheet from Amazon yesterday. I cut a piece out and sandwiched it between my 55-300 and a UV filter on the front of the lens.

This was my first try with this setup (And a Kenko 2x for a 600mm effective focal length):

If you look close you can just make out a couple sunspots. This was shot using a tripod but I was in a rush so I didn't pull out my remote shutter release. I did do a 5 picture bracket spread at .7 stop per bracket. The slightly underexposed (by the cameras meter set at center spot metering) bracket gave me the most detail.

I picked up a #12 welding shield, I will experiment with that over the weekend.

It is REALLY REALLY hard to get sharp focus on the sun. I used manual focus and just breathing on the focus dial would push it to the other side of near/far focus.

This is how much of an APS-c (A77) frame the sun covers at 600mm. I expect (hope for) more detail with my Celestron 750mm sct (mirror) lens and Celestron 1000mm C90 Mak lens. I have plenty of solar filter sheet to cover both these lenses.

Good stuff...thanks for sharing. Sunspot activity has been pretty minimal the last 4 months.
