Says who? With flash there is extra metering for the flash exposure!
The flash metering uses the information read from the sensor during the pre-flash to calculate the "real" flash exposure. With my M5, the aggravating delay happens BEFORE any flash fires. And it happens even with the flash in manual mode.
So this delay is some superfluous metering being done for no reason at all when in M mode, with ISO, AV, TV, and manual focus all locked in! There's no real excuse for any delay at this point.
However, there is another "feature" that these cameras have. There is, under "Flash Control" (in menu 5), "Safety FE". Which is supposed to save us from overexposure if the non-flash lighting would blow the picture out with the selected TV and AV and ISO settings. But I have that disabled, and still get this delay!
I've also tried shutting off the exposure simulation to no avail.
The only thing that lets the camera fire in a somewhat reasonable amount of time is to half-press the shutter button until the exposure settings are "confirmed" on the display (even though they cannot change because they're all locked in already!). Then, the camera fires after only a somewhat annoying delay, rather than a two or three second delay.
As much as I want to love this camera, it's got some bugs that will make it far less useful for nighttime bug-hunting with flash expeditions, something I really enjoy. Pre-pressing the half-press, however, works fairly well for me when doing this. So I'm thankful for everyone in this thread who have suggested that.
Still, it doesn't look like I've found the small, light system of my dreams yet. I may well still use my old 40D with the MT-24EX and 60mm macro for most of my nocturnal bug safaris!
I'm hoping for a firmware update, but I won't hold my breath!
