Re: Review criticism justified

There's loads of work for you review Police to sort out....

Love this comedic thread, one of my all-time favorites.

You list the faults and strengths of the camera, you say you love the camera, give it your highest rating, and everyone jumps on you. Well, almost everyone.

First of all, there are OBVIOUSLY no rules for "reviews." Anyone who says otherwise is simply wrong. Obviously the critical people claiming you must or cannot say something in a "review," or that you can't give "five stars" (out of a potential five) to a camera with some clear weaknesses are simply misguided to say your review is a failure or violates some rules about reviews. There are simply no such rules. Those critical people assume there are, or must be such rules for reviews, but they all seem, consistently, unable to cite any source of such rules, or even the rules themselves. Or do I have to recite the commonplace description of the effect of "assume?"

Now, the people who feel that your review is misguided can plainly say so, for any reason they choose, or even without any reason. Most of them have, as I see it, some agenda that involves their own personal point of view, although they feel quite empowered, and pleased with themselves, for pointing out how your review is nothing but an expression of your point of view...And therefore some kind of failure, or erroneous. Hence the comedic aspect.

For me, one of the amusing things in your review is your willingness, even perhaps perverse pleasure, in stating all the things the SDQ cannot do, or is not so good at compared to other, more common cameras. And I use common in its most derogatory sense: Common as in ordinary, average, unexceptional, undistinguished. Common as owned by people of no extraordinary discernment, who value being one of the herd, and buy because everyone else is using the camera, so it must be good. That is common.

The point is to appreciate and use the Sigma cameras for what they do well, not to dismiss them for what some people think the cameras can't do well, or at all. Who cares what such people think? Personally, I view still photography as a sort of visual poetry, And there is room in the genre for Emily Dickinson, Milton, and W.H Auden, as well as for haiku. One key to poetry, perhaps the main key, is constraint. One key to image making is the idea that an image of a thing is not the thing itself. (Magritte) An image must stand on its own, and the idea that to be useful, or valid, an image must express or contain the maximum possible DR or some other aspect of "reality" to to be "real" mainly misses the whole point of making an image.

Thanks for your review of the camera and I plan on getting one.

Richard

Thank you Richard, enjoy your SD-Q, the thread has also amused me no end, unfortunately l can't stop to chat because l'm off out shooting with my camera today, l'm hoping for F16 light today, in the event of no dice on that one l'll probably donate it to charity for obvious reasons....
