The 'right hand side softness' seems to be field curvature mostly.

I'm still trying to get a grasp on it: at smaller working distances it is less of an issue. It mostly hurts for landscape (and then it hurts hard).

But seems I can work around by placing the focus point to the extreme right. One would expect the center to become out of focus, but the image seems to become 'more generally sharp'. Probably the lens has more field curvature than initially visible.

While doing these experiments the left hand side seems to be different as well from the center, but not by as much.

In any case, that trick is only needed for landscape. For indoors and portraits, the field curvature doesn't really matter.
