Canon is not known for excellence in shadow details (or dynamic range). Yet, somehow, your favorite photographers manage to produce great photographs you admire.

This sorta tells me these people don't give a wit about shadow detail and you shouldn't either. Pick your next camera system using other criteria.

Bummer about your old Nikon but I hope you can put all this behind you and move on with a new, fresh and exciting new camera!
