Sony steals Olympus thunder - new strategy needed?

"The big benefit of mirrorless is that we can use information read out from the sensor in many ways. Autofocus speed, subject recognition, and so on. If we can continue to develop this kind of technology, even very conservative DSLR users will notice." - Masamichi Handa.

Well, they just took notice. But unfortunately it's thanks to the new Sony A9. I've just been trawling through the Internet reactions to the A9 and it's quite astonishing the buzz that it's creating. Lot's of high profile photographers coming out and saying this is their dream camera, or their desert island camera and expecting it to put the big guns from Canon and Nikon under serious pressure.

But how will it impact Olympus and their plans to extend the EM1.2 'hands on' events to attract more professional DSLR users to mirrorless?

From this early buzz, it seems almost certainl that the A9 is going to grab the attention of many of the DSLR -> MILC switchers and that means competing with and maybe eating into Olympus's 'high value Pro strategy'.

But on the other hand, the interest generated in making the DSLR -> MILC may also help to grow the MILC market segment even further, which could be beneficial for all the players.

Interesting times.

I'm expecting an Olympus good news story when the FY2017 financial performance is reported, and they have the OMD EM10.3 being prepped for announcement, perhaps an opportunity to grab a bit of the MILC limelight.

If they asses the A9 as maybe impacting EM1.2 sales into the Pro market, perhaps we may see some incentives to widen its appeal?
