55-200 is an unbelievably good lens. Crystal clear and tack sharp wide open. It only gets a little soft right out near the 200 end (which is 300mm equivalent, that I don't use much). At the equivalent 70-200 scope it is really unbelievable. It is as sharp and resolves as well as my magic Nikon AFS 70-200 (from my Nikon days).

The first VR was a pretty good lens.  The second VR suffered from focus breathing so it made it useless for portrait shooting.  The third E series promises to be a great lens.

The only thing that lets this lens down for me is that when I travel Asia and shoot in the incredible dusty filthy conditions, it is not dust sealed. Unfortunately for these situations the 55-200 stays home and I have to travel with the lesser 18-135 because it is WR.
