Here's an example of when not to use Auto. Because the subject is so much darker than the overall scene, the black bird is underexposed and has no detail. I'd use spot metering, placing the focus/meter box right on the bird's head.

The exposure looks fine on this. Auto worked well. But notice how the aquarium is distorted? That's on account of shooting at 18mm, which is much wider than a normal field of view. Also, getting down even with the tank would have helped.

You're on the right track.
