A little more digging and it seems that the star eating effect occurs with bulb exposures greater than 4 seconds.

Tests done with recent firmware refer to 'normal' shutter shots of 4 seconds or longer as well as bulb shots:

'I seem to trigger the effect with normal shots, as soon as I go beyond 3.2 seconds per shot. I tried ISO100, ISO640, ISO6400, raw compressed or raw uncompressed, normal shot or timed shot or external trigger ...'

Thanks for the reply.

It looks like the firmware upgrade v 3.3 for the A7R2 extends the effect to non bulb exposures above 3.2 seconds, too bad.

I'm just looking for an answer for the A99ii before I plunge into an expensive fast wide angle lens.
