I've never used Auto ISO--what am I missing?
2

I'm shooting with a D7200 and a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8.  Typically I can get away with handheld ISO 100 (prefer as low as possible considering shutter speeds).  I dial ISO up if I have to, then back down, manually.

That said, I read the exif data on a lot of images shown on dPR on this and other forums where the shooter obviously was using Auto ISO.  Something I've never done.

What am I missing?  Is there indeed a real good reason to use Auto ISO, some factor that I'm just not considering?   Is there a way to configure the Auto ISO feature on my D7200 to where it acts just like I manually change ISO settings?

In the few times I have tried Auto ISO, just experimenting, it seemed the camera just wants to shoot at a higher ISO than I would have chosen, for its own reasons.  Which is why I don't use it.
