A9: Due to what technological limitation does speed still have to come at the cost of resolution?

I was wondering about this. I'm glad they didn't put 42 Mpix into the A9 so I don't have a reason to upgrade personally. But I'm also wondering why they didn't.

This has clearly been a limitation with other cameras for some time (also Nikon and Canon), but I wonder why is it so hard to overcome, even for a market-leader like Sony?
