Do .NEF files really get corrected already during shooting or is this possibly some kind of meta data exploited by the viewer?

Changes applied for things like distortion are recorded as "file instructions" to Nef images, and are applied when viewed through most Nikon software.

The big difference between jpeg and Nef is that many camera settings can be changed after taking the picture in Nikon software using Nef in a "lossless" form, and far fewer jpeg changes can be made without loosing some image detail.

The "lossless" concept can be important.

"Lossless" changes add another file instruction leaving the original recorded information fully intact.

"Save" in jpeg looses some of the original information if there are edits prior to "save".

In jpeg "save as" makes a duplicate file and leaves the original jpeg detail untouched.

Some say if some of your photos are not good the camera you use is only a recording device.

Interesting. In camera processing seems to always generate a JPG, whereas ViewNX-i generates a separate XML-like nksc file with new settings for the NEF.
